Puglia, in southern Italy, is one of the country's most productive wine-growing regions. From the spur of the boot near Foggia to the tip of the heel behind Lecce, Puglia stretches for 400 kilometers. The area has the most grape varieties in southern Italy, about 80 percent of them red. Mediterranean climate and calcareous subsoils with iron oxide-rich layers above create perfect conditions for viticulture. In the dry, hot summers, the grapes ripen optimally, and the wines become deeply dark, earthy and full-bodied.
