Today, ginger beer is mostly known as a soft drink stirred together. Here comes the original, which has hardly been produced commercially for a long time - properly brewed ginger beer, which thus really deserves its name. Fentimans uses the finest Chinese ginger root as a basis, which is fermented and is largely responsible for the aromatic, spicy-hot taste of the drink. In addition to the ginger, a well-balanced combination of aromatic herbal extracts - lemon, pepper, speedwell, juniper and yarrow - rounds out the flavor.

Thomas Fentiman came to brewing lemonade like the virgin to the child. In 1905, a merchant approached him for a loan - and offered him a recipe for herbal brewed ginger beer as collateral. The loan was sealed with a handshake - as was customary at the time. However, it was never repaid, leaving Fentiman in possession of the recipe. With this recipe, he set up a business in Gateshead near Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England and chose Fearless, his beloved German Shepherd, as his logo. The simple ginger beer was soon followed by other varieties with different flavors, but their basis always remained the vegetable-brewed ginger beer. Soon Fentimans' vans were delivering the lemonades door-to-door until the mid-1960s, when the big supermarkets entered the business. The company ran into rough waters and eventually had to cease operations. Until 1988, when Eldon Robson, great-grandson of Thomas Fentiman, reopened the company, which is now based in Northumberland, and thus revived the traditional brand.
The lemonades are brewed there today just as they were in the early days. They are based on mashed ginger, which is then mixed with a syrup prepared from natural ingredients that determine the respective flavor. The ginger mash always provides a certain basic spiciness and tartness to the lemonades. They are not superficially sweet and pleasing, but accentuated fruity, sometimes with strong acidity, and some varieties need to be tasted first. As they are properly brewed, they may still contain residual alcohol (maximum 0.5% by volume).
